Skype Inc. has issued an official report announcing the immediate availability of a Skype client for iPhone and iPod touch. Available in the App Store as of today, the free application is supported on all iPhone models and the second generation iPod touch with a compatible headset and microphone, according to the app's makers.

“Skype software for the iPhone has been the number one request among our users. We are delighted to deliver on this request and put Skype into the pockets of millions of people around the world who are carrying iPhone and iPod touch devices,” said Scott Durchslag, Skype’s Chief Operating Officer. “Skype for iPhone will open up new ways for more than 400 million Skype users to stay connected and take their Skype conversations with them. HTC Touch Diamond2 Might Land on April 19

According to the latest news on the Web, we might be able to see the HTC Touch Diamond2 launched on the European and Asian markets as soon as mid-April. The Taiwanese mobile phone maker unveiled the new device at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, back in February, when it also announced that the handset should become available on the market in the second quarter of the ongoing year.

As many of you might already know, the handset has been previously spotted on various sites where it was available for pre-order, and now we learn that it should indeed come to the market as soon as April 19, at least this is what Uberphones reports that the retail listing site Expansys shows.

In case the HTC Touch Diamond2 indeed makes it to Expansys on April 19, then expect it to be available for purchase for 424.99 pounds, or about $608, a price that would be $100 higher than the pre-order one that was seen during the second half of last month. In addition, we should also mention that the handset listed for retail there will not sport support for U.S. 3G bands, so you might take that into consideration as well in case you'd like to grab such a unit.

In case the rumor proves true and the new HTC Touch Diamond2 comes to the market on the aforementioned date, we should expect a North American version of the handset to surface soon after. Hopefully, there will be more details on the availability of the device in the near future, so stay tuned to learn the news, as well as some info that might surface on the wireless carrier that would plan on adding the mobile phone to its offering.

Microsoft Announces New Apps for Windows Mobile Users

Microsoft's Windows Mobile users have now a new reason to rejoice. After learning about some of the goodies that the Redmond company intends to bring with its future releases of the operating system, including support for its Marketplace and online services for mobile users with the upcoming WinMo 6.5, we also heard recently that there might be support for Over-the-Air updates coming with the platform, as well as new features to come along with it and with Windows Mobile 7, such as Silverlight and Zune. And now there is even more.

This time around, we learn that MySpace and Microsoft announced that a new MySpace mobile application would soon become available for those who own a Windows Mobile 6.1-powered mobile phone. According to MySpace, its new application is to be released this summer, it will work on WM handsets and it will use Silverlight. In fall, the app will also be included on the Windows Marketplace for Mobile, while LG Electronics plans to include it with its future Windows phones, slated for release on the market in the second half of the ongoing year.

“Talking to family, sending pictures and connecting with long-lost friends is important to our customers, and we are giving them the option to do that on the go by teaming up with MySpace,” said Stephanie Ferguson, general manager Business Experiences Team, in the Mobile Communications Business at Microsoft Corp. “MySpace is a pioneer in the social networking space, and the MySpace application will be a tremendous asset to the collection of applications you can access on your Windows phone.”

In addition to the new MySpace application, Microsoft also announced enhanced support for social-networking sites such as Facebook, MySpace and Windows Live. The software giant has come up with a new Facebook application, which is expected to become available for WinMo users for free starting April, offering them an easy solution for capturing video clips and uploading them on the popular site.

In addition, the company also announced the near availability of Windows Live for Mobile. Starting April 2, the owners of a Windows Mobile 6.x-based handset will be able to download for free the Windows Live for Mobile, which includes support for 25 languages. The app suite will offer them mobile versions of Windows Live Hotmail, Windows Live Messenger, Windows Live Contacts, Windows Live Spaces and Microsoft Live Search, as well as leveraged photo upload functionality. Those who would like to enjoy the new app suite will be able to download it from here starting April 2.

A new beta version of Windows Live Hotmail will also become available to users via a mobile Web browser, says Microsoft, offering a new user interface, along with navigation improvements meant for touchscreen handsets, as well as the possibility to view full HTML pages within e-mail messages and a new search feature allowing users to easily find the messages they want. Nokia Photo Browser Announced for S60 5.0 Phones

The Nokia Beta Labs has recently announced yet another application that has been developed to leverage even more the user experience of those who own a Nokia 5800 XpressMusic mobile phone, as well as for those who have another Nokia S60 5.0 phone that comes with touchscreen capabilities, just like the flagship model, the Nokia Photo Browser.

The new application, just as its name suggests, is meant to allow users to browse through their images. But that is not all there is to the new Nokia Photo Browser. While offering an easy-to-use image browsing solution to anyone who has a compatible device, the new app is also able to offer speed whenever it is needed.

“Photo browsing should be fun!” is what the development team says, while also adding that the new Nokia Photo Browser has been designed to offer users new ways of viewing their photos, including “Face browsing,” a feature that makes use of the face detection technology to be able to find peoples' faces from pictures.

One more nice thing that the “Face browsing” allows users to do is to browse through people’s faces in an image via the simple flickering of the fingers. The Photo Browser also comes with a feature that is called “MagGlass” magnifier, which has been developed so as to make the image zooming feel much more real and analog than before.

One thing that the development team says about its new application is that it is still in the works and, as such, it comes with limitations. Yet, future versions are to come with improvements and new features. While the current release only works with Symbian S60 5th Edition, a version for the 3rd Edition will also become available in the near future. In the meantime, those who own an S60 5.0 handset with touchscreen capabilities are invited to try out the application and provide the team with feedback so that they would know what needs to be fixed or added.

Sony Puts PS2 On Sale

Sony is cutting the price of its PlayStation 2 console by almost 25 percent in both Europe and North America, the company said Tuesday.

The console, which has just begun its tenth year on retail shelves, will cost €100 (US$133) and US$100 from Wednesday. It previously cost €130 and US$130.

Sony has sold more than 136 million of the consoles since it first launched on March 4, 2000, in Japan. It went on sale in Europe and North America in November of the same year.

Despite the launch of the more advanced PlayStation 3 console, the older model has remained equally popular in part due to the large catalog of games and low price. New software for the console continues to be published, and the price cut seems to ensure that its popularity will continue.

The price cut is due to improvements in manufacturing that allow Sony to consolidate components together onto more highly integrated chips and general reductions in the price of technology used in the console, which doubles as a DVD video player.

In its current financial year, which ends Tuesday, Sony expects to sell 8 million of the consoles, which is not far off the 10 million PlayStation 3s it expects to sell in the same period.

As of the first nine months of the year -- the period from April to December 2008 -- sales stood at 6.5 million PlayStation 2 units. Software sales over the same period were 72.1 million units.

Devil May Cry is a videogame developed by Capcom Production Studio 4 and published by Capcom Ltd. The game was released exclusively for the PlayStation 2 console from Sony and debuted in August 2001. It helps that Dante has been investigating super natural occurrences for a living and that he is a superb fighter, equally skilled with a huge sword and with his signature twin pistols, Ebony and Ivory. As the game progresses and as the fights get tougher, Dante will begin to use even more powerful weapons, some of them channeling demonic energy themselves. The level of violence in the game is high and this, coupled with the quick paced action sequences, made it a best seller on which Capcom capitalized by launching sequels, the most recent being Devil May Cry 4.

Defeating the Phantom

When you get chased by the Phantom (the big spider) in the hallway, you do not have to kill it. If you run to the end of the hallway and go into the door at your right, when you come back out, it will be gone. To defeat the Phantom, you must strike either his face or back. When he charges up his blast from his mouth, hit him in the face until the attack backfires on him. This inflicts a large amount of damage. Make sure to dodge his claws when close; and if he attacks with his tail, roll or jump to the sides to dodge it. He will also sometimes attack with flaming spikes that rise from the ground. Before this happens, you will see an orange circle glowing beneath Dante's feet. Roll to dodge this. Continue to strike his face and back until he falls. To skip defeating Phantom in the hallway completely, immediately run to the left and press X. This will take you into the room with the lion. When you go back into the hallway, you will notice that Phantom is gone.

MySpace Developer Platform Now with Silverlight Support

MySpace managed to adopt its direct rival, Microsoft's Silverlight. And while Adobe launched the ActionScript 3.0 Client Library for Facebook Platform API, officially supported by Facebook along with PHP and JavaScript, MySpace announced that the MySpace Open Platform would play nice with Silverlight. With this move, developers will now be able to build Silverlight applications tailored specifically for the MySpace Developer Platform.

“Microsoft is pleased to work with MySpace to enable developers to create compelling and custom OpenSocial applications using Silverlight,” revealed Brian Goldfarb, director of the developer platform group at Microsoft. “By utilizing the Open Source kit released by Microsoft and MySpace, developers can now harness the power of the rich media features in Silverlight to take the user experience to a new level for the MySpace community.”

But MySpace did not stop at introducing support for Silverlight in the MySpace Developer Platform. The social networking hotspot also made available the Open Source kit, set to up streamline the development and integration of rich media features into OpenSocial applications. At the same time, the two companies are cooking yet another aspect of their collaboration, according to Michael S. Scherotter, developer evangelist, Communications Sector of North America Microsoft.

“On Thursday, April 2, MySpace and Microsoft will jointly release a kit on the CodePlex Open Source site (with the MS-PL License) that will make it easy for developers using Visual Studio and designers using Expression Blend to create Silverlight applications on MySpace’s OpenSocial-based developer platform,” Scherotter explained.

Microsoft said that the collaboration with MySpace would keep Silverlight in tune with the evolution of the MySpace Developer Platform, enabling new resources for developers to build interactive applications for the social network. “Working with developers at MySpace we’ve created a kit that would let designers with Expression Blend use data binding in Silverlight to connect to the data provided by the MySpace Developer Platform. We’ve even added design-time and offline sample data to the kit to aid in development,” Scherotter added.

Google Mobile app brings voice search to BlackBerry

The latest version of Google Mobile App is already available for download for BlackBerry users. With it, you'll be able to enjoy all the goodies that have only been available to iPhone OS and Android users.

The features that the new Google Mobile app introduces to the BlackBerry owners are voice search and My Location. The first of those allows you to initiate a Google search without ever needing to touch the keyboard. All you need to do is speak the desired search string while holding the Call key - as simple as it gets.

The My Location feature enables users to make searches based on their current location. This means that when you need a place to eat nearby you no longer have to type "restaurant near X", you just type "restaurant" and the Mobile App will give you a list of places in the vicinity.

The Google Mobile app is available to all devices running BlackBerry OS 4.1 or later with the search by voice available on all versions subsequent to 4.2.

The bad news is that the BlackBerry Storm is not yet supported but this should be added in the near future.

Security Researchers Find Weakness in Conficker Virus

Security researchers from the Honeynet Project have developed a simple proof-of-concept network scanner that is able to identify machines infected with the infamous Conficker worm. The tool leverages a weakness in the worm's own patch for the Windows vulnerability it uses to get in.

Conficker is one of the most complex and widespread worms in the history of the Internet. It has infected millions of computers worldwide – up to 12 million, according to some accounts – and spreads from computer to computer by copying itself to removable storage devices and network shares or brute-forcing administration passwords.

However, the worm's main method of propagation, and the one that has made it so successful, is exploiting a critical vulnerability in the Windows operating system, identified by Microsoft as MS08-067. Once a system is compromised, Conficker tries to prevent other malware from getting in through the same flaw and, in order to achieve this, it attempts to patch the hole by deploying a custom fix, and not the one that Microsoft has provided.

This attempt at self-patching is where the weakness, identified by Felix Leder and Tillmann Werner, two German security researchers affiliated with the Honeynet Project, relies. In particular, Conficker hooks into the NetpwPathCanonicalize() function and watches for requests in order to identify and terminate foreign exploitation attempts.

“Conficker installs a handler that checks for suspicious paths before passing it to the possibly vulnerable NetpwPathCanonicalize() function. All of the three considered Conficker variants return the error code for 'invalid parameters' (87) in case they either find a \..\ in the path or if the path is longer than 200 wide characters. This legitimate error code is returned to the calling RPC program. The constant return code from Conficker can be exploited to remotely identify infected machines,” the researchers explain in their paper (PDF).

Furthermore, all variants of the worm, namely .A, .B and .C, do this even if the MS08-067 vulnerability has been fixed using the legit patch released by Microsoft. This means that not only unpatched systems, infected by Conficker, can be identified, but all computers, including the ones compromised through network shares, USB memory sticks, etc.

Even better news is that the Conficker Cabal, an alliance of organizations led by Microsoft that is fighting the worm, has been made aware of this research in advance of it being published. The coalition has worked in secret with the creators of popular network scanners such as Nessus, Qualys, McAfee/Foundstone, nmap, or ncircle, to help them add the Conficker-detection capability to their products.

This development is particularly important for network administrators, as it will allow them to scan and clean their network of Conficker infections before the worm is set to start contacting its command and control servers to receive instructions. Conficker generates a list of around 50,000 domain names, which the infected computers will randomly start querying on April 1st, to check for updates from its creators.

Even though most of the security researchers advise to calm down and claim that nothing will happen on April 1st, many IT professionals are edgy and worrying about this date. The experts argue that the Conficker creators have alternative methods of pushing updates and can do it at any time, therefore making the existence of a specific date pointless. Furthermore, the worm is only set to start checking for online command and control servers on this day. It does not necessarily mean that it will find any, or that its creators will start giving instructions to the botnet.

MSI Intros Easy computing for home users - Wind Top AE1900

After having been showcased at CeBIT in Hanover, Germany, the new Wind Top AE1900 has just been officially introduced by MSI. According to the Taiwanese company, the new system is expected to provide users with an easy-to-use, low-power, all-in-one
desktop PC that can easily be used in almost any part of your home. The system is based on the familiar Intel Atom platform and boasts touchscreen technology, which makes it easy for users to interact with the system.

For those who went to CeBIT this year, the specifications of the Wind Top AE1900 are no secret; however, for the majority of computer users the AP1900 comes as a new product all together. The system is powered by one of Intel's latest Atom processors, the Atom 230, which can operate at between 1 and 2.5 watts, increasing the energy-saving features of the new Wind Top all-in-one.

Based on the integrated Intel GMA950 graphics chipset, the Wind Top AE1900 is featured with an 18.5-inch WSXGA 16:9 LCD screen surrounded by a transparent frame. One of the main features of this 18.5-inch display is that it boasts touchscreen technology, enabling users to easily interact with the system.

Aside from that, the AE1900 is featured with 2GB of DDR2 memory, a 160GB SATA hard drive, two HD audio speakers, a 1.3MP webcam, a 4-in-1 card reader and a DVD Super-Multi optical drive. The system has four USB 2.0 ports, one RJ45 Gigabit Ethernet LAN port and 802.11 b/g/n wireless connectivity.

As it is designed on Intel's Atom technology the new MSI Wind Top AE1900 needs only 45 watts of power while at its full operating potential. This basically enables an 80% power save compared to traditional PCs, making the AP1900 all the more suitable for home users.

Sapphire to Roll Out Toxic HD 4890 with Vapor-X Cooling

Sunnyvale, California-based AMD is expected to update its graphics card offering with the introduction of the new RV790-based Radeon HD4890 graphics accelerator. According to current rumors, the new card should be officially announced on April 2, which will enable a number of the company's partners to come out with their own designs. Such is the case of Sapphire, which will try to further increase the performance of AMD's
upcoming flagship card, by introducing a “Toxic” version of the aforementioned model. This basically means that this card will boast factory-overclocked core speeds and a new custom cooling solution, further boosting performance.

the new Sapphire Toxic card will be featured with a Vapor-X cooling solution, which will enable Sapphire to further boost the factory frequencies of the new release. While standard models will deliver clock speeds of 850MHz and 3900MHz for the GPU and memory, respectively, Sapphire's card could easily reach a GPU core speed of 900MHz. This will likely enable the HD 4890 to better compete with NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 275, also slated for release sometime in early April.

The aforementioned website also claims that AMD's next-generation graphics card will be capable of delivering clock speeds of over 1000MHz, when combined with higher-performance water cooling solutions. While such reports are yet to be confirmed, it will be interesting to see if the higher clock rate will enable AMD to reclaim the performance crown in the single-GPU market segment.

The guys over at fudzilla also managed to score a picture of the package of the Vapor-X-equipped HD4890 graphics card, which basically confirms that Sapphire should roll it out in the near future, probably two weeks before AMD's official release of the new RV790-based Radeon HD 4890.

fring Is Now Working on Nokia 5800 XpressMusic Too

Those of you who own a Nokia 5800 XpressMusic mobile phone now have one more reason to rejoice, as fring, the popular VoIP/multiple IM network client, is reported to be available for your S60 Touch handsets as well.

According to fring, the work on the new version of the application started as soon as the Finnish mobile phone maker announced the availability of the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, as there was a large number of users who asked on fring forums, Twitter and Facebook pages for the app to become available for the device.

One important feature of the S60 5th Edition application is the fact that it has been enhanced to take full advantage of the touch capabilities of the 5800 XpressMusic handset, this being able to leverage the user experience of anyone fond of fring. It should provide easy access to ICQ, Windows Live, Google Talk, or Yahoo! Messenger, as well as to Facebook, Last.fm or Twitter.

The new Twitter 2.0 for fring is announced to be available for mobile users who own a Windows Mobile or a Symbian-powered handset.

According to fring folks, there are some new features that come around with the new Add-on, which has been developed to enhance the user's experience while working with the application. Users will now be able to view other Twitter profiles, while also having the possibility to check on their followers and see who is following them.

Among the improvements that can be spotted with the Twitter 2.0 Add-on for fring, there is a new look of the app, along with new keyword search capabilities, allowing users to “keep on top of a particular topic.” At the same time, they will also be able to open links that have been included in their incoming Tweets. One more option that has been added is the possibility to turn off the beep sound played when tweets are received, which means that users can now tweet silently.

The guys from fring also announced that the source code to the new Twitter 2.0 Add-on had been released as well, as was that to additional add-ons. This move is meant to allow the web developer community to reuse the code and come up with their own features.

Those who already use fring on their Windows Mobile handset and would like to upgrade to the new Twitter 2.0 Add-on will only need to go to the Add-ons tab in fring, and un-subscribe from Twitter and re-subscribe to the new version. Symbian users will have to download the new fring version 3.37, available here,


and then un-subscribe from the old Twitter and re-subscribe to the new 2.0 Add-on.
