How to Combine Summer Fun and Learning

1. The lemonade stand
On a hot day, everybody loves lemonade — and lemonade stands! That old-time activity is actually a terrific opportunity for children to learn math and science skills (by measuring and mixing the lemonade) as well as social skills (when they interact with customers).

Start by talking with your child about what she'll need — lemonade, a table and chairs, paper cups, decorations for the stand, a sign announcing the price, and a box to keep the money in. Where would be a good place to set up the stand? How much will she charge for each cup of lemonade? When it's time to make the lemonade, help her measure 4 tablespoons of lemon juice, 8 tablespoons of white grape juice, and 6 cups of water into a large plastic pitcher. Stir and chill. Outdoors,6 Ways to Combine Summer Fun and Learning help her set up the stand and hang the sign. Demonstrate how to greet customers, pour, and serve the lemonade (if necessary, pour the lemonade into smaller pitchers to make it easier for your child to handle), and make change. When the big event is over, talk with her about what she'd like to do with the money she earned!

2. The alphabet garden
Any kind of gardening is a great way for kids to learn the science of how things grow. Planting a theme garden can make the learning experience even more fun.

One favorite is an ABC garden. Together with your child, look through seed catalogs or garden centers to choose what you'll plant — one variety for each letter of the alphabet. When you create your garden, have your child make a tag for each plant or paint the plant name on a rock with enamel paint. To make the project as rewarding as possible for your child, you'll want to steer him toward plants that are hardy and grow quickly in your area. Some of the most reliable vegetables and flowers are bush beans, cherry tomatoes, herbs, marigolds, radishes, zinnias, and zucchini. If you live in an urban area and don't have room for a full garden, try doing an abbreviated version of this activity. Choose vegetables or flowers that start with letters that spell out your child's name or initials, and plant them in a window box.

3. Local tours
How do doughnuts get their holes? Where does the mail in the mailbox go? How do farmers milk so many cows? You and your child can discover the answers by going behind the scenes at a doughnut shop, post office, or dairy.

Just ask your local proprietors. They may be willing to allow chaperoned children to pay a visit and see all that goes on in their busy workplace. You may think of other great places to see as well! Before the trip, talk with your child about where you're going and what questions he'd like to ask when you get there. Write them down and bring them with you for reference. Take lots of photos of your trip, and help him put them in his summer scrapbook.

4. Dramatic endeavors
Two important areas of the early childhood curriculum — literacy and dramatic play — come together when children act out their favorite stories.

Give yourselves at least a week to put together a complete performance. First, invite your child to choose a story — anything from The Three Little Bears to Caps for Sale. Or encourage him to work with you to write his own story or play! After that, he can assign roles to siblings, cousins, or friends who want to get in on the act. Help the children rehearse their lines, design the sets, create the costumes, write up a playbill, and hand out tickets. Then raise the curtain and let the play begin! If kids have fun with this idea, next time you might suggest a concert or a magic show.

5. Summer experiments
There's no shortage of scientific topics to investigate during the summer! Here are a few ideas:
• Go out at night and capture lightning bugs in a clear plastic jar. Poke airholes in the top. Encourage your child to observe the insects carefully. Talk together about how they move and why and when they light up. After a day or two, release the insects outside.

Make wind chimes with aluminum cans, plastic bottles, and string. Compare the sounds the different containers make.

Place an ice tray in the sun and another in the shade. Compare how long it takes the ice in each tray to melt.

Add different colors of food dye to crushed ice. Notice how the colors mix to create new ones.

To make the experiments an even richer learning experience, encourage your child to read books, draw pictures, or write a story about the topic you're investigating.

6. Beach collections
Why not add learning to your seaside adventures? Before you go, check your local library for books about fish, waves, boats, or other water-related topics. Read them together to prepare for your trip, and bring them along to read again in the car or under your beach umbrella.

When you get there, the fun is just beginning! Slather on the sunscreen and encourage your child to search for treasures along the shore. Hunting for rocks, shells, or beach glass can take a whole afternoon. Talk about the wonderful diversity as you add to the collection. Back under the umbrella (or back at home), sort and classify the treasures by color, size, shape, or other category of your child's choice. Encourage her to add to the collection all summer long — and next summer too.

10 Cheapest most Fun Family Events Without Leaving Home

It's time to get back to basics. Here are 10 great ideas for cheap family fun without leaving home.

1) Sleepover movie night. Move all of your mattresses onto the family room floor for an energetic and fun family sleepover night. The kids will love it as you pop some corn, make root beer floats and watch a funny movie. Nothing brings a family closer than sleeping together as you tell stories and get away from video games, the computer and other distractions. We did this over the holidays and the kids still talk about it. 10 Cheap, Fun Family Events

2) The (enter your last name here) Family Olympics. Now that the weather is shaping up, take a weekend day and hold an Olympics just for your family. Events can range from crab walks to walking with an egg on a spoon to the infamous water balloon toss. A combination of individual and team events will make everyone feel included. Use your imagination on this one -- the events are limitless.

3) Top Chef Family Challenge. Playing off the popular TV show, this turns into a party. Invite 2-3 families over and have a cook off. One thing to remember is that you need to set some ground rules so no one goes hog wild and prepares grilled sea bass or filet mignon. At the very least, make each family create one dish that has a $10-$15 limit. Have everyone taste the dish and declare a winner. The best part? Potluck at the end.

4) Backwards day. Take a day during the weekend and reverse everything to create your own backwards day. Here are some good ideas: have breakfast for dinner; put your clothes on backwards; watch a movie in the morning and cartoons in the evening. Include the kids in the planning and enjoy the ideas they come up with. Anything that is out of the norm will make for a fun day and break the daily routine.

5) Treasure hunts. These can be as elaborate or as simple as you wish. We started this when our kids were 3 and 4 and needed something to keep them busy while my wife was working from home. Simply ask them to "find something purple" and as soon as they find it and bring it back, request something else. At the end, give them a treat or a little reward. To make it more elaborate, give them a list of the things that you've hidden and let them go.

6) Eat like a pig. Kids love a mess -- that's not debatable. So break the rules one night this summer and have a dessert eating contest with only one rule -- no hands. Your kids will think they have died and gone to heaven. Any excuse to eat without silverware and be funny. This will be a blast for everyone. It's even better if you can move the contest to the backyard and hose everyone down when it's over.

7) Have a themed dinner night. One of the greatest tools we have to bring a family together is the good ol' family dinner. Just tweak it a bit. Make spaghetti, put on some Italian music, and have each member of the family bring one fun fact about Italy. Cook an authentic dish from where your family roots lie and let the kids learn their history. This is a great way to get kids to try new foods, learn about other cultures, and have fun at the same time. Get them involved in the cooking process to empower them.

8) Have an outdoor food fight. I made the mistake years ago of telling my kids about a food fight that broke out in high school. Now they ask me about it at least once a month. This isn't something I would do all the time, but it shows that you can let your hair down, have a little fun, and not take yourself so seriously. Just make sure you choose a food that is easy to clean up, and doesn't hurt when you get hit by it.

9) Make slime. Nothing says fun to a kid like something that's gross, oozing and slimy. Follow this recipe to make cheap and fun slime to entertain your kids for hours. It's easy to make, and it's a fun science experiment that will leave them playing for hours. This recipe was from a preschool function we were at years ago -- and I have yet to find a kid that doesn't love it.

Recipe:
1 ½ cups of warm water
2 cups white glue
Food coloring (any color)
Mix in container #1
1 1/3 cups of warm water
3 Tablespoons of Borax
Mix in container #2
Add container #1 to container #2, but do NOT stir. Pull it from the bottom and work with hands until all the liquid is gone (about 5-7 min.).

10) Family game night. I'm not talking about board games -- that's been done to death. If you're like me, you spend way too much time telling your kids that they can't play Xbox (or Wii). Well, indulge them. See what all the fuss is about, grab a controller and join in. Get the whole family involved and play a fun, multiplayer game like Rock Band or Lego Star Wars. The kids will be thrilled that not only are they playing video games, but they're not at war with you while doing it -- and you'll wonder where the last two hours went.

Yemenia Airways’s Airbus A310 Flight IY 626 Crash

Bad weather reports are announced from Moroni.
Flight IY-626  from Sana’a to Moroni ,  about 142 passengers and 11 crewmembers are missing.
Clubske Air Research announces the flight left Paris on monday, made a stop in Yemen and then
flew on to the Comores. Most of the passengers on the disasterflight should be Comores-residents.

The boy, said to be a toddler, is the only known survivor so far of the passengers and crew on board the Airbus 310 Yemen Airways flight IY626 Airbus A310 Crashaircraft that ditched in the sea after an aborted landing attempt at Moroni Airport on Grand Comore.
France's transport ministry said 66 of those on board were French citizens, inflicting a second major air disaster on the country in a little over four weeks.
Exactly a month ago an Air France Airbus 330 carrying 228 passengers and crew disappeared over the Atlantic after taking off for Paris from Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.
In the latest disaster, the flight had departed from Charles De Gaulle Airport for Sana'a in Yemen via Marseille. There, passengers had changed plane from an Airbus 330 to an Airbus 310 and been joined by others for the rest of the flight to the Comoros via Djibouti.
Initial blame is being put on bad weather, with air officials in the Comoros Islands reporting strong winds of 38mph, gusting to 70mph.
But Dominique Bussereau, the French transport minister, also said that the plane had been kept out of his country's airspace because "numerous faults had been noted".
Yemenia Air itself was being "very closely monitored", she said.
The Comoros Islands are an archipelago off the coast of East Africa between Madagascar and Mozambique. They were previously a French colony, and another member of the group, Mayotte, remains a French territory.
The French nationals are believed to be mainly residents originally from the islands now living in France and returning home for the summer holidays at the end of the school year.
The largest Comorran community in France is in Marseille, where the flight picked up the majority of its passengers.
Witnesses at the airport in Moroni, Grand Comore's capital, said people waiting to meet relatives saw the plane coming into land but it veered away and turned as if to make a second approach.
It then disappeared from radar screens.
Yemenia Air's website carried a brief statement saying it regretted the loss of flight IY 626 and giving families an emergency number to ring.
Passenger lists showed that numerous families, including three babies, were on board.
The Comoros government said speed boats were sent to look for signs of wreckage immediately, helped by two French fighter jets based in Mayotte and another of the country's Indian Ocean territories, Reunion.
They spotted an oil slick around 16 miles offshore.
When the boats arrived they found a number of bodies floating in the water, and had taken three from the water when they found a toddler still alive, according to a Yemenia and local officials, quoting rescue workers.
A child was found alive. He is now on a rescuers' boat," said Ben Imani, a doctor at Moroni's main hospital.
Sana'a airport said there were 142 passengers on board the plane, with the remainder being crew.
Christophe Prazuck, a French military spokesman, said a frigate, Nivose, and patrol boat, Rieuse, were on their way to the scene. A military transport aircraft was in addition taking a team of divers and doctors.
A crisis unit has been set up at Charles de Gaulle airport, and another in Marseilles. The Comorros consul for the south of France, Stephane Salord, said: "There is considerable dismay. These are families that, each year on the eve of summer, leave Marseille and the region to rejoin their families in the Comoros and spend their holidays."
The Air France aircraft that crashed while flying from Brazil to Paris a month ago was also an Airbus, but attention is more likely to focus on the record of Yemenia Air.
A group of Comorans in France had formed a protest group to complain about conditions on board the Air Yemenia flight on which they depended to return home.
The group, "SOS voyage aux Comores" (SOS Comoros Travel), alleged that passengers were herded on to the plane "like cattle".
The airline has yet to comment.
Airbus said the plane had gone into service in 1990 and been operated by Yemenia, Yemen's national airline, since 1999. It had accumulated 51,900 flight hours.
Grand Comore is the largest of the islands, the others being Mohéli and Anjouan. Its 800,000 population makes it one of Africa's smallest countries, but also one of its most densely populated.
Yemen, which occupies the southernmost part of the Arabian peninsula, is troubled by Islamist, sectarian and tribal violence, and the authorities are still looking for a Briton and and a German family of five kidnapped there earlier this month.
However, there are no initial suspicions of terrorist involvement on this occasion.

Michael Jackson's doctor delayed a half-hour to call 911after

30 Minute Delay in Calling 911 for Jackson

It took Michael Jackson's doctor a half-hour to call 911 after finding MJ unconscious -- this according to the doc's lawyer, Edward Chernoff.
Chernoff explained this bizarre revelation by saying Dr. Conrad Murray didn't immediately make the call from his cell phone because he didn't know the exact address of Michael's mansion. For the record, the house is just above Sunset Blvd. in Beverly Hills -- one of the most famous streets in the country.
Chernoff said Murray eventually got someone in the house to make the call.
Murray has already taken heat for performing CPR on Jackson as he was lying on a bed. Chernoff's excuse ... it was a "firm bed."

Blackberry Awesome And Saves Your Life From a 700-Feet Fall Also !!

Most of us like their gadgets to be as slim and small as possible. We never even think about the actual use that a less slim handheld might have, if used properly and in the right situation. Such as saving your life (and I don't mean hitting the thief over the head with your phone) should you be in a situation where your life needs saving.Blackberry Saves Man from a 700-Feet Fall

Here's something interesting that I recently read about in The Sun. The story of David Fitzherbert, a man who fell 70 feet and thanks to his Blackberry came to a sudden stop. He was skiing in the Matterhorn and Monterosa peaks in Switzerland when the snow beneath him gave way and he fell into a mountain crevasse.
The length of the crevasse: at least 70 feet. At least 70 because after falling to his doom for 70 feet, his fall (which apparently could have gone for as long as another 700 feet) was halted by his trusty Blackberry phone. It seems the phone's thickness was exactly what was needed for the man to get stuck in-between two walls of ice.
The result: a broken jaw, smashed teeth, a cracked chest bone and nose injuries, not to mention severe hypothermia due to being stuck between walls of ice for two hours. But at least he was alive, and all thanks to his mobile buddy. Which, funny enough, still worked after our man reached the hospital and allowed him to call his wife. I'm pretty sure this phone will be held at high regards by David Fitzherbert in the future!
“Fortunately the extra inches of the Blackberry were enough to block the fall. […] I was stuck so fast they had to get a drill to dig away at the ice around me. I was eventually winched out by the helicopter rescue team,” David said after having recovered.

Now Available In EU One Charger for All Mobile Phones

Technorati Tags: ,,,

It seems that mobile phone users in EU will soon be able to use one charger for a wide variety of mobile phones coming from more than one handset maker. The European Commission announced on Monday that top mobile phone makers agreed to back an EU-wide harmonization of phone chargers, a move that comes as great news for the environment. All data-enabled handsets in EU to use one standardized charger starting next year

“People will not have to throw away their charger whenever they buy a new phone,” said EU Industry Commissioner Guenter Verheugen. At the same time, he also estimated that each year thousands of tons of waste in Europe represent unwanted phone accessories. According to the European Commission, the agreement will result in the creation of an EU norm, and that the compatibility will be ensured via a micro-USB socket present on future mobile phones.
According to the news, some of the companies that already announced intentions to back the EU decision include Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Motorola, Apple, LG, NEC, Qualcomm, Research in Motion, Samsung and Texas Instruments, which account for around 90 percent of the European market. The first phones compatible with standard charging devices are expected to come to the market as soon as next year, stated an EU executive.
Some estimations point towards the fact that there are around 400 million mobile phones in Europe, and 185 million are bought each year. The upcoming chargers will only become available for data-enabled phones, which are expected to account for about half of the devices purchased in 2010. According to the Commission, as people get rid of older handsets, all data-enabled mobile phones in Europe should use standardized chargers within the following three to four years.
Industry group DigitalEurope stated that, while at the beginning the new data-enabled handsets would come along with the chargers, they would begin to be sold separately after a certain period of time. For the time being, there are no details regarding a possible price tag for the standardized charger. “We're assuming this new European initiative will have a knock-on effect globally and manufacturers won't just be doing this on the European market,” Verheugen said.           Source

Iranian ambassador Saying That CIA Who Behind Neda Agha Soltan’s death

In an interview with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer, Iranian Ambassador to Mexico Mohammad Hassan Ghadiri implicated the CIA in Neda Agha Soltan’s widely-publicized death.neda

Via the LA Times, here’s a snippet of the inducing exchange:

WOLF BLITZER, CNN ANCHOR: Well, we’re anxious to hear your government’s response to all of these developments which have been very dramatic over the past two weeks. A key question many people around the world are asking is, why did your security forces kill that 26 year-old beautiful student named Nada?

MOHAMMAD HASSAN GHADIRI, IRANIAN AMBASSADOR TO MEXICO: I prefer to answer this in Persian.

BLITZER: Go ahead.

GHADIRI (through translator): This death of Ms. Nada is very suspicious. She was shot from behind. The location was where there was not much demonstration, there was no police presence and the gun that shot and killed her was a smuggled gun. It was not a government-issued gun.

Blitzer is incredulous.

BLITZER:  Are you seriously accusing the CIA of killing Neda?

GHADIRI (through translator): We say that the bullet that was found in her head was not a bullet that you could find in Iran.

These are the bullets that the CIA and terrorist groups use. Of course they warned that there would be a bloodshed in these demonstrations and then they could attribute that to the Islamic republic. This is part of a common act of CIA in various countries.

BLITZER:  Do you really believe that, Mr. Ambassador?

You’re a distinguished diplomat representing Iran. This is a very serious accusation that you’re making, that the CIA was responsible for killing this beautiful, young woman.

GHADIRI (through translator): I’m not saying that the CIA had done this. There are different groups. Could be intelligence services, could be CIA, could be the terrorists.

Well, it’s nice to know the OMG terrorists don’t just terrorize us poor beleaguered Americans.

CIA spokesman George Little hit back at the allegations, saying:

“Any suggestion that the CIA was responsible for the death of this young woman is wrong, absurd and offensive.”

It should also be noted that Neda was, by most reports, shot in the chest- not the back or the head as Ghadiri seems to think. Ghadiri went on to accuse the international media of digging its propagandist claws into Iran, accusing news outlets of overlooking violent Moussavi supporters and unironically stating:

“Some of the reporters and mass media do not reflect the truth.”

Video: Tommy Ervin "Florida water park Manager" Fired for Sexually Harassing the Mermaids

weeki-wachee-mermaids

Tommy Ervin, the manager of a Florida water park has been fired after some of the mermaid performers complained they were sexually harassed.

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection, which oversees the Weeki Wachee Springs State Park located north of Tampa, did an investigation last week after there was a problem detected in the park’s payroll. While doing the investigation, the DEP found that Ervin had indeed been falsifying payroll documents. But he was also accused by other staff members of treating the mermaid performers inappropriately. They claimed he had been making lewd comments of a sexual nature.

Ervin was fired shortly afterward and denies the charges. He had been managing the park since November of 2008.

Federal prosecutors Seeking For 150 Years "Life Sentence" In Bernard Madoff Scandal

Federal prosecutors in Manhattan want Bernard Madoff to be sentenced to 150 years in prison.

The disgraced financier is due in court on Monday for sentencing in his massive fraud case.Federal prosecutors in Manhattan want Bernard Madoff to be sentenced to 150 years in prison.

Federal prosecutors said in court papers filed Friday that sentencing guidelines require a 150-year term. They said any lesser sentence should still make sure he's behind bars for life.

Madoff's lawyer has said his client should serve only 12 years.

The 71-year-old former Nasdaq chairman was arrested late last year after telling his sons that his secretive investment advisory business was a giant Ponzi scheme.

He pleaded guilty to securities fraud and other charges in March and has been in jail ever since.                                  Source

Download Opera 10 Beta Build 1606-Final Edition Just One Step Away

Opera made available no less than two development milestones of Opera 10 this week, the last one today, June 26, claiming that it was close to releasing the final build of the browser to web. Just a couple of days ago, the browser maker was offering Opera 10.0 Build 1601 Beta. On June 24, a member of the Opera team revealed that “We are quickly approaching the final release of Opera 10.0, so we have been working on fixing bugs and stabilizing the program.”Download Opera 10 Beta Build 1606

Essentially, it sounded like Opera was putting the finishing touches on the next iteration of its browser. The changelog covers a consistent volume of items spanning across all the flavors of Opera 10 for Windows, Mac and Linux, and covering the UI, the core of the browser, and even Opera Unite. In this regard, although the Norwegian company claimed that the final stage of Opera 10 was close, fact is that the browser still has to go into the Release Candidate phase before it hits RTM.
“What we need to do now is to identify any remaining issues that are serious enough to block the release (so-called ‘showstoppers’). There are some more bugfixes coming up, so we are not quite ready for a release candidate yet, but you should definitely let us know about any serious issues we may have missed,” the Opera team representative added. “This build includes numerous bugfixes and general stability work, as well as skin fixes, and some important changes to Opera Link.”
The June 26 release brings tweaks with the graphical user interface, but also fixes for UPnP issues affecting Opera Unite. “We have also enabled some experimental UPnP code, so please report any unexpected network related issues that you come across. Any crashes can simply be reported through the new crash dialog. In addition to that, we have the first 64-bit Qt4 builds for Linux. As a final note, the native skin is still not finished,” the Opera team representative stated.

Michael Jackson’s Death Causes Surge On BitTorrent

The ‘King of Pop’ may have died but his music lives on, and on file-sharing networks, maybe stronger than ever. Less than 24 hours after Jackson passed away hundreds of thousands of file-sharers have downloaded one or more of his albums on BitTorrent.

michael jMichael Jackson suffered a cardiac arrest on Thursday afternoon, which was likely caused by a Demerol overdose and ultimately led to his death.

There is no doubt that Jackson had a tremendous impact on several generations of musicians, and millions of people who grew up with his music. It is therefore no surprise to see that only hours after he was pronounced dead, his music is being sought by hundreds of thousands of people.

At the time of writing the three most active torrents in the music section on the largest torrent indexer, Mininova, are all compilations or discographies from the “King of Pop”. On top is a torrent listing 30 Michael Jackson albums, The Jackson 5 and The Jacksons, totaling 1.94 GB of music.

In common with social media sites, ‘Michael Jackson’ is one of the most sought after phrases on torrent sites too. The search cloud on Mininova is filled with Jackson-related searches from fans who want to complete their collection.

Michael Jackson fills Mininova’s search cloud

tag cloud

This renewed interest in Michael Jackson is not limited to just torrent sites though. On Amazon, Jackson’s work takes up the top 14 spots on the bestselling albums list. Currently the top 10 albums chart on iTunes is dominated by 7 Jackson albums. On eBay there is a similar boom with memorabilia being traded for ten times the prices of just two days ago.

It had been rumored by Michael Jackson biographer Ian Halperin that the ‘King of Pop’ had recorded as many as 100 unreleased tracks but was keeping them locked away. He claimed that upon Jackson’s death, the tracks would be made available to his three children as a personal legacy and to secure an inheritance.

With Jackson’s death the 100 songs could now become available, and considering his troubling financial situation it may not take very long before they become available to the public, in stores and on BitTorrent.                                                 Source

Pirate Bay Retrial Call Rejected By Swedish Court

A Swedish court has thrown out a request for a retrial by the four men behind The Pirate Bay website.

The four were found guilty of promoting copyright infringement in April and face jail sentences and hefty claims for damages. Pirate Bay Logo

The Pirate Bay's lawyers called for a retrial when it emerged that one of the judges in the case belonged to several copyright protection groups.

The Swedish court said the judge's affiliations did not bias the case.

The Svea Court of Appeal said Judge Tomas Norstrom should have declared that he was a member of the Swedish Association for the Protection of Industrial Property and the Swedish Copyright Association before the case went to trial.

"The fact that he failed to shed light on this does not however mean that there was any wrongdoing during the proceedings that would require a retrial," said the court in a statement.

"This was not a case of bias," concluded the court.

No appeal is allowed against the judgment.

The Pirate Bay is well-known for hosting lists of websites where people can get pirated copies of movies, music, software and TV shows.

The Pirate Bay defended itself saying that it did not infringe copyright because none of the pirated material is stored on its servers.

The court found them guilty because, it said, they continued to operate the service even when they knew users were being pointed to pirated material.

The four men behind The Pirate Bay, Frederik Neij, Gottfrid Svartholm Warg, Carl Lundstrom and Peter Sunde, were sentenced to one year in jail and told to pay damages of 30m Swedish kronor (£2.3m, 2.7m euros) to entertainment companies such as Warner Bros and Sony Music Entertainment.

In response to the ruling Peter Sunde said The Pirate Bay would now file charges against Sweden for violating the human rights of the defendants.                                                                                                                                                       Source

Google Thought "Michael Jackson" Searching Processes Were Attack on It’s Service

has confirmed that the surge of Michael Jackson-related searches on Google News Thursday was first interpreted as an attack on its service.

Google News was inaccessible for some people Thursday afternoon right as rumors of Jackson's death began to circulate, replaced by an error message reading "We're sorry, but your query looks similar to automated requests from a computer virus or spyware application. To protect our users, we can't process your request right now."

Of course, those queries were quite legitimate, as millions around the world searched for accurate information regarding Jackson following reports that he had suffered cardiac arrest. The spike in queries began at about 2:45 p.m. PDT Thursday, and Google thought the traffic was an attack for about 25 minutes before realizing what was going on.

Google also noted that it saw a huge spike in mobile searches. Yahoo's data backed up Google's; it set a record for unique visitors in a single day with 16.4 million visitors, and its lead story on Jackson's death was the most highly-visited story in its history.                                                                                                                                                                                      Source

Searches for Michael Jackson surged a little before 3 p.m. PDT Thursday.

Netflix Moving to the Nintendo Wii : Rumor

Netflix was hugely successful when it arrived on the Xbox 360 gaming consoles from Microsoft as part of the New Xbox Experience updated. Until now, more than 1 million subscribers have used it to watch at least one rental movie on a console initially designed to focus on videogames. And it seems that Netflix is actively pursuing the possibility of bringing the same kind of concept to the Nintendo Wii, the best selling home gaming console of the current generation. Netflix Moving to the Nintendo Wii

Joystiq has seen at least one report talking about the move and is looking for feedback. It seems that a new disc will be sold for the Wii, called the “Netflix Instant Streaming Disc,” and that the library will initially offer around 12,000 TV show episodes and full feature movies.
It's not clear whether an initial fee will be required or whether potential Netflix users on the Nintendo Wii will be paying individually for each item that they will watch. Another previous survey mentioned a 9.99-dollar tag.
Nintendo is talking of launching its own, in house video streaming service that is already on a test run in Japan, which might be an obstacle to a Netflix partnership. On the other hand, the two could be seen as complimentary, with Nintendo offering more videogaming-oriented programming through its service and Netflix bringing actual movies to gamers.
As always, the statements coming out from the Netflix leadership are not too revealing. Steve Swasey, who is the vice president for corporate communications at the company, said that “We're always interested in expanding the Netflix streaming functionality, but Xbox 360 is the exclusive console for now.” This might mean that no deal is done with Nintendo but that the technical possibilities exist and are being explored by both companies.                                                        Source

Windows 7 Discounts: Professional $99.99 and Home Premium $49.99 Now Live

Pre-orders get the green light

On the same day that it announced officially the pricing of Windows 7, Microsoft also revealed that customers would have the opportunity to buy the two main editions of the next iteration of Windows at discounted prices. The discounts went live on June 26, 2009, and Windows 7 Professional is available for $99.99, while Windows 7 Home Premium can be bought for just $49.99.Windows 7 Sale

One good place to start is the Microsoft Store. The Redmond-based company not only sells the two Windows SKUs at the discounted prices but also offers a list of its partners that do so across North America and Japan. As a reminder, the special offer is only available in the US, Canada and Japan.
“Promotional pricing is available on Windows 7 Home Premium and Windows 7 Professional upgrade versions only. This promotional pricing is a limited time offer, while supplies last, and is limited to three (3) copies per edition per customer,” Microsoft informs. In the US and Canada, the special prices will last until July 11, or as long supplies are still available. In Japan, Microsoft will discontinue the offer on July 5.
What are customers getting? Well, they're getting the upgrade editions of Windows 7 Professional and Home Premium. I have seen questions related to whether a clean install of Windows 7 was possible using the upgrade media. The answer is apparently yes. But the fact of the matter is that with the upgrade, Windows 7 media consumers also get an upgrade license. Meaning that they might install Windows 7 as they see feet, either upgrade or clean install, but only as long as they already have a genuine, licensed copy of Windows Vista or Windows XP. Otherwise, they would be breaking the EULA, essentially pirating.
“Pre-Orders can be reviewed, updated, or cancelled at any time before pre-order items are released,” Microsoft explained. “Prices for pre-order items are covered by the Pre-order Price Guarantee, which describes what happens if prices change after you purchase a pre-order item. A credit card is required for pre-order, but your card will not be charged until your order is shipped or the product is made available for download. If you wish to return an item that was pre-ordered, the 30-day return period begins: when downloadable products are delivered electronically to your account; when physical products are shipped.”                                                                                                                                                                           Source

CO2 Causes Massive Ear Bones in Fish

The bones are used for orientation and acceleration

Experts at the University of California in San Diego (UCSD) Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) have recently These are fertilized eggs of white seabass, each containing an embryo with an attached yolk sac and oil globule (droplet) discovered in a new study that high levels of the dangerous greenhouse gas carbon dioxide (CO2), which is largely blamed for global warming, also cause numerous mutations in fish. Among these, they highlight the fact that fundamental body structures in some species were significantly affected, as in the case of ear bones (otoliths), mainly used for acceleration and orientation.

In a scientific paper detailing the finds, published in the June 26th issue of the prestigious journal Science, the Scripps team present some of the conclusions they came to, after subjecting fish to abnormally high concentrations of carbon dioxide in the tanks they lived. They say that mutations and extreme growth appeared in the otoliths, which caused the animals to become confused and unable to survive in their designated environment.
According to the team's previous assumptions, otoliths in young, white seabass should have grown a lot slower if the fish lived in high-CO2 waters. But the new research seemed to tell a different story, expressing the fact that the growth process was actually accelerated. Also, they learned that the fish's body sizes did not increase proportionally to their ear bones.
“At this point one doesn't know what the effects are in terms of anything damaging to the behavior or the survival of the fish with larger otoliths. The assumption is that anything that departs significantly from normality is an abnormality and abnormalities at least have the potential for having deleterious effects,” Scripps Oceanography Professor David Checkley, the lead author of the new study, explains.
“Number three is the big one. If fish can do just fine or better with larger otoliths then there's no great concern. But fish have evolved to have their bodies the way they are. The assumption is that if you tweak them in a certain way it's going to change the dynamics of how the otolith helps the fish stay upright, navigate and survive,” he adds.
The levels of carbon dioxide in the world's oceans are already beyond normal limits, as human activities dump more and more of the chemical in the waters. Carbonic acid is one of the byproducts of the chemical reactions that occur, and it plays a major role in destroying coral reefs around the globe, and in forcing countless other species to relocate to different habitats than those they are accustomed to grow in.                                                                                                           Source

James Kiernan Attacked By Knife In Bus After Reading Text Message About Michael Jackson

A man on a Broward County, Fl. bus was attacked Thursday by a knife-wielding fellow passenger after reading a text message about Jackson aloud during the ride.Michael Jackson fans nearly came to deadly blows on a city bus ride.

James Kiernan, 60, told authorities he announced the news of Jackson’s death after receiving the text, to which the bus driver responded, “He should have been in jail a long time ago.”

Uh oh! Those are fighting words for sure.

Kiernan quickly defended the King of Pop and said “the world just lost a great musical talent,” according to police. But that comment sparked outrage, not from the bus driver, but from 54-year-old Henry Wideman, who was sitting in the seat in front of Kiernan.

In classic Jackson fashion, Kiernan told Wideman to beat it, but Wideman was far from done.

Wideman told Kierman to “shut the ---- up,”  and the men got into a brief shouting match. Then Wideman pulled out a 6-inch long blade and chased Kiernan around the bus, kind of like Jackson in the "Bad" video.

Wideman finally jumped off after the bus driver called police.

Broward County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested Wideman a few moments later and charged him with assault with a deadly weapon.

12 Years Boy Rejected By Jewish School Because His Mother Had Converted

A leading Jewish state school broke race laws by refusing to take a boy whose mother had converted at a progressive synagogue rather than an orthodox one, the Court of Appeal ruled today. 12 Years Boy Rejected By Jewish School Because His Mother Had Converted

JFS, formerly the Jews’ Free School, is highly oversubscribed and has turned away several pupils for not meeting its criteria of Jewishness.

Previous court hearings have supported the school for making this decision on religious grounds. But the Court of Appeal ruled today in favour of the parents of one boy, who accused the school of racial discrimination.

The school, in Brent, North London, rejected the 12-year-old because, although his father was born Jewish, his mother converted at a progressive rather than orthodox synagogue. Jewish custom dictates that the faith line passes through the mother.

The judges said that “the requirement that if a pupil is to qualify for admission his mother must be Jewish, whether by descent or by conversion, is a test of ethnicity which contravenes the Race Relations Act”.

The ruling will have widespread implication for other faith schools, and puts the court on a collision course with the Office of the Chief Rabbi, Jonathan Sacks, from which the school takes its its definition of which children are Jewish.

It strikes at the heart of whether being Jewish is a religion or a race, and means that such schools will now have to adopt a religious practice test.

JFS said it was “disappointed” and would seek leave to appeal to the House of Lords against the decision.

But other Jewish groups and families welcomed the ruling, saying that they had been marginalized and discouraged from speaking out.

The court ruling said: “No school is permitted to discriminate in its admissions policy on racial grounds.”

This can result in it rejecting devout Jews not born into the faith, while accepting those who do not practice but have impeccable Jewish lineage.

The ruling said: “JFS readily acknowledges that the effect of its admission criteria will be that, even when oversubscribed, it admits children whose own families do not share the Jewish faith.

“This choice [discrimination between Jewish and non-Jewish] is permissible on religious grounds, but unlawful on racial grounds.

“M [the boy] was refused admission to JFS because his mother, and therefore he, was not regarded as Jewish.”

It continued: “It appears to us clear that Jews constitute a racial group defined principally by ethnic origin and additionally by conversion and, that to discriminate against a person on the ground that he either is or is not Jewish is therefore to discriminate against him on racial grounds.

“If for theological reasons a fully subscribed Christian faith school refused to admit a child on the ground that, albeit practising Christians, the child’s family were of Jewish origin, it is hard to see what answer there could be to a claim for race discrimination.

“The refusal of JFS to admit M was accordingly, in our judgment, less favorable treatment of him on racial grounds.”

After the judgment, John Halford, who represented the boy’s father, said: “We welcome the strong statement by the court that the fundamental right to equality before the law, regardless of race, applies to the admissions criteria of a faith school.

“It is unlawful for a child’s ethnic origins to be used as the criterion for school entry. Such a practice is even more unacceptable in the case of a comprehensive school funded by the taxpayer.”

Many other Jewish schools operate similar policies and will be directly affected by the court’s decision.

David Lightman’s daughter was also turned away by JFS because it did not accept her Jewish status, even though her mother is head of English at the school.

Mr Lightman, an orthodox Jew, said yesterday: “This is a victory for common sense and religious freedom. We are talking about two Jewish children who want an education.

“If the school thinks it’s worth spending millions of pounds to stop that happening, then they need to re-examine what Judaism is about.”

JFS is one of Britain’s oldest Jewish schools and is the largest Orthodox Jewish school in Europe, with 2,000 pupils. It is described by Ofsted as outstanding and is oversubscribed every academic year.

Rabbi Danny Rich, chief executive of Liberal Judaism, said: “The JFS, a state comprehensive funded by taxpayers, has been exclusively following one Jewish religious authority and ignoring the rest.

“We object to standard-setting by just one section of the community to the detriment of the rest. The JFS will now be open to children from all types of Jewish background.”

But Sir Jonathan, the Chief Rabbi, said: “The principles underlying membership of the Jewish faith have been maintained consistently throughout Judaism’s long history.

“I have advised the leadership of JFS that they have my full personal support and encouragement to use the necessary avenues available to them to maintain our historic rights to be true to our faith.”

Windows 7 Home Premium is cheaper than Windows Vista Home PremiumWindows 7 Boxes

Pricing was the last detail that Microsoft still had to reveal when it comes down to Windows 7. The Redmond-based company certainly took its due time, but the prices for the retail and upgrade packages of Windows 7 have now been finally made public. According to the software giant, the prices for Windows 7 will enable consumers to pay less and get more value for their money. The truth is that, with a small exception, Windows 7 editions will cost the same as the Windows Vista SKUs.

“So here’s the low-down on pricing for Windows 7. The estimated retail prices for upgrade packaged retail product of Windows 7 in the U.S. are: Windows 7 Home Premium (Upgrade): $119.99; Windows 7 Professional (Upgrade): $199.99; and Windows 7 Ultimate (Upgrade): $219.99,” revealed Brandon LeBlanc, Windows Communications Manager on the Windows Client Communications Team (emphasis added). Just in case you are curios, the Windows Vista Home Premium (Upgrade) costs $129.99; the Windows Vista Business (Upgrade) is $199.99; while the Windows Vista Ultimate Ultimate (Upgrade) is priced at $219.99.
“The estimated retail prices for full packaged retail product of Windows 7 in the U.S. are: Windows 7 Home Premium (Full): $199.99; Windows 7 Professional (Full): $299.99; and Windows 7 Ultimate (Full): $319.99,” LeBlanc added. In contrast, Windows Vista Home Premium (Full) ERP is $239.99; the Windows Vista Business (Full) costs $299.99; while the Windows Vista Ultimate Ultimate (Full) is $319.99.
In this regard, Microsoft is in fact offering a reduced price only for the Home Premium edition of Windows 7 in comparison with the same SKU of Windows Vista. “For Windows 7, we are reducing the price on our most popular retail product for customers, the Home Premium Upgrade, by approximately 10% (depending on the market). In the U.S., this means a customer buying Windows 7 Home Premium upgrade will pay only $119.99 instead of the $129.99 being charged today for its predecessor,” LeBlanc stated. “Windows 7 Home Premium full retail product is $40.00 less than Windows Vista Home Premium today.”                                                                                                                                   Source
